JollyPhonics Crash Course

Discover the magic of phonics with our Jolly Phonics Crash Course at The Talking Letters Learning Hub. This intensive program is designed to introduce learners to the foundational skills of reading and spelling using the acclaimed Jolly Phonics methodology.
Through interactive sessions and hands-on activities, children will learn the 42 letter sounds of English and their corresponding actions (mnemonics). They will also practice blending these sounds together to read and write simple words, laying a solid groundwork for literacy skills.

Why do we teach letter sounds instead of letter names?

🔎 Learning the letter sounds is crucial for developing strong reading and spelling skills. By teaching letter sounds, we empower children to blend different sounds together to form words when they read, and segment words into individual sounds when they spell. This approach enhances their phonetic awareness and phonics skills.

🔠 Unlike letter names, the letter sounds directly correspond to the sounds heard in words. Teaching letter sounds at the beginning helps children make meaningful connections between the sounds and the written symbols. However, please note that we do introduce letter names as well. Initially, our focus is on the sounds, gradually incorporating letter names into the learning process.

✅ Jolly Phonics uses the systematic synthetic phonics method (SSP), which means that the letter sounds are taught first, on their own, and children are then taught to blend sounds together to say (‘synthesise’) the word.

✅ Jolly Phonics meets the 16 essential core criteria for SSP programmes, and is validated but the Department for Education.

💡 SSP is widely recognised as the most effective way to teach children to read and write in English. Over the past 35 years, our immense progress has been studied in numerous research projects, the results of which led to phonics becoming central to the UK curriculum.
